Now Motorola says it will give the Edge Plus two Android updates after all

Motorola Edge Plus on window sill

The Motorola Edge Plus is the latest ~$1,000 flagship phone on the market in 2020, and it ticks quite a few boxes. Between the 90Hz screen, 5,000mAh battery with wireless charging, and 108MP main camera, there’s plenty to like.

Unfortunately, software updates were left wanting after Motorola quietly divulged that the Edge Plus is only guaranteed to receive Android 11 (i.e. one major update). It’s a disappointing situation when you consider the amount of cash you’re spending. Fortunately, the company has made a U-turn and is now promising two major Android updates.

“We’re excited to share that all Motorola Edge Plus consumers will enjoy a clean Android 10 experience and are expected to receive at least two Android OS upgrades,” the company told Android Authority in an emailed announcement.

In other words, that means Motorola Edge Plus users can rightfully expect an upgrade to Android 11 and Android 12 (or 11.1, whatever Google ends up calling it).

Firmware updates aren’t the be-all-and-end-all for smartphones, but a lengthier commitment period only makes sense when you’re dropping $1,000 on a phone. It doesn’t hurt that Google is trying to make updates even more seamless with Project Treble and other recent initiatives.
