This week in Apple: New AirPods might be delayed, but new Apple TV isn’t

Apple TV 4K

This week in Apple news we found out some bad news for AirPods fans. It appears that the new set of AirPods we expected to see launch soon might have been delayed due to supply chain issues stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

In other Apple news, we found out that the next iteration of the Apple TV streaming box is apparently ready to go, WWDC will be online-only and begin in June, and a bunch of Apple stores around the world are scheduled to re-open in the coming weeks.

See the Apple news roundup below for all the latest.

The top Apple news stories of the past week:

  • AirPods might be delayed: We expected to see a new set of AirPods launch soon, supposedly more expensive than “regular” AirPods, but less expensive than AirPods Pro. However, it appears supply chain issues could be preventing the launch of the new true wireless earbuds. Looks like we’ll need to wait until 2021.
  • New Apple TV is “ready to ship”: An updated version of Apple’s streaming media box is apparently “ready to ship,” according to new rumors. The updated box could have an A12 chip and come in either 64 or 128GB storage options. It will also support 4K streaming.
  • WWDC 2020 will be online only (obviously): The 2020 iteration of Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will start on June 22, 2020. The online-only conference will feature some sort of keynote where the company will unveil iOS 14, iPad OS 14, and possibly some new hardware, such as AirTags.
  • Apple and Google announce rules for COVID-19 API: The Exposure Notification API Google and Apple are creating together is now closer than ever to actual implementation. Earlier this week, the two companies issued the ground rules for developers who will use the API. Check out the full rundown here.
  • RIP the awful butterfly keyboard: Apple tried to revamp its laptop keyboards with so-called butterfly keys. However, with this week’s launch of a new 13-inch MacBook Pro, the company no longer sells any new laptops with the butterfly system. Good riddance.
  • Apple Stores starting to re-open: Apple has re-opened several of its stores already inside Greater China, where the coronavirus originated. However, it is also now slowly re-opening stores in other areas such as Australia and Europe.
