  • Huawei is reportedly planning to launch the P50 in the first half of 2021.
  • It’s claimed that the new phone will be powered by the Kirin 9000 processor.
  • This comes despite Huawei reportedly claiming that the Mate 40 was the last Kirin flagship.

US sanctions may have done plenty of damage to Huawei’s business, but it hasn’t stopped the firm from producing flagship phones just yet. The company revealed the Mate 40 series last month, and it now looks like the Huawei P50 series is still on the way as well.

Korean-based outlet The Elec reports that the Huawei P50 series is scheduled for launch in the first half of 2021, citing people with “direct knowledge” of the situation. The outlet adds that LG and Samsung are preparing to supply OLED panels for the new flagship.

A new P-series flagship in the first half of 2021 isn’t surprising at all, given that this has been the release schedule for years now. Where things do get rather interesting is in the publication saying that the Kirin 9000 processor is expected to power the new smartphone. This comes after Huawei reportedly suggested that the Mate 40 series would be the last Kirin-powered flagship phone.

This report, if confirmed, suggests that Huawei still has enough of a stockpile of Kirin 9000 chipsets to deliver its early 2021 flagships. So it might not have to rely on less capable chipsets or processors from other chipmakers just yet.

Even if the Huawei P50 series is able to offer the Kirin 9000 processor, the range will still be subject to US sanctions and a ban on using Google Mobile Services. So the brand will likely be leaning heavily on its home market of China for the bulk of its sales.

Nevertheless, we thought that the Huawei Mate 40 Pro offered a great all-round experience if you didn’t care for Google integration. So if the lack of Google support somehow isn’t a deal-breaker for you, then you might want to keep an eye out for the P50 too.
