  • Google is reportedly working on bringing enhanced haptic-audio feedback to ringtones on the Pixel 6.
  • A new API available in Android 12 commands the feature.
  • Although ringtones are the primary focus, the feature could also be used in games and music playback.

Smart haptic-audio feedback is coming to Android 12. The new API, first spotted in early developer builds, allows developers to create vibration patterns to match audio outputs on supported devices. Now, rumors suggest that the Google Pixel 6 will be one of those devices.

According to XDA-Developers‘ Mishaal Rahman, Google’s next flagship line will support the feature, bringing smarter vibration patterns to ringtones. While this seems to be Google’s main focus, evidence suggests the API can be used for other audio sources. This includes games, and more interestingly, music playback.

The Pixel 6 Pro‘s rumored dual stereo speakers make the latter prospect more intriguing. It’s a possible hint that Google’s serious about the phone’s audio credentials. Coupled with these smart haptics, it could make the Pixel 6 Pro a capable pocket boombox.

Rahman doesn’t believe Google will use this feature to enhance music, though. Instead, bringing more immersion to ringtones seems the goal for Google. Understandably, apps would also need to support the API to take advantage of it. However, the possibility is there.

While the API is available in Android 12, OEMs will likely need to include the haptic hardware necessary to utilize it. Don’t be too surprised if Google’s next flagship is the first device to show off the feature.
