- Samsung could be working on a rollable smartphone.
- The company has filed a trademark application for a device named “Z Roll.”
Samsung may be looking to expand its line of foldable devices by introducing a rollable phone. According to folks over at LetsGoDigital and GalaxyClub, the company has filed for a trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), possibly revealing the name for its first rollable smartphone.
The trademark application is for a device named the “Z Roll.” If we go by the names of Samsung’s current foldable phones like the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip, it’s not too difficult to imagine a rollable phone called the Galaxy Z Roll. Then again, Samsung could be just covering its bases by acquiring the moniker in case it ever decides to launch a rollable phone.
Meanwhile, the trademark description notes that this device comes under the smartphone category and could work with an S Pen.
Samsung Display recently showed off a smartphone-style concept for a “slidable” or rollable device at the Display Week 2021 exhibition. The company described (machine translated) the design in its press release as “a product that can enjoy the advantage of a large screen by extending the screen horizontally while maintaining the shape of an existing smartphone.”
As shown in the image above, the display of the concept device extends from the right side to give you some more real estate to work with. The idea is very similar to LG’s now shelved rollable smartphone.
Nevertheless, we may still be a while away from a rollable Samsung phone. The company is presently expected to launch the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 sometime in August. There’s no word on a rollable device, but this trademark filling and the recent concept showcase suggest Samsung might be serious about the form factor.
