  • Mozilla has called out three “creepy” devices that people should avoid buying during the Prime Day 2021 sale.
  • The products include the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3, Ring doorbells and cameras, and the Amazon Echo Dot speakers.

Prime Day 2021 is upon us. Through June 21 and June 22, you should expect to get a whole lot of deals on things like smart speakers, smartwatches, smart home products, and other electronics. However, before you go ahead and make your purchase, Mozilla, the organization behind the Firefox browser and a proponent of internet privacy, has called out three “creepy” products that you should avoid buying during this Prime Day sale.

In an Instagram post about safe shopping during Prime Day 2021, Mozilla has recommended that you refrain from buying Amazon’s Echo Dot smart speakers, Ring doorbells and cameras, and the Samsung Galaxy Watch 3.

The company states privacy issues with all three products as a reason for its recommendation. It pulls up the Amazon Echo Dot for targeting users with stuff to buy using their personal information and for using voice requests to train Alexa’s speech recognition system. If you still want to buy an Echo Dot, Mozilla suggests you familiarize yourself with how to delete Alexa voice recordings.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is called out for gathering a lot of personal information about users in one place. Samsung also says that it may share that data with business affiliates who may target users with ads. As per Mozilla, you should consider getting a Garmin smartwatch instead as it apparently does “the best job of handling privacy and security” of its wearables and doesn’t share user data for marketing purposes.

The Ring doorbells and cameras, even though the company made two-factor authentication mandatory, have been pulled up by Mozilla for sharing surveillance footage with law enforcement, raising concerns around racism and public safety. Mozilla says you should consider getting camera products from Eufy or Arlo instead.

What do you think of Mozilla’s list of creepy products? If you get a good deal on any of the above, would you skip them after reading what the company has to say? Let us know in the comments section below.
