Update: August 19, 2021 (8:16 AM ET): We’ve updated our PUBG: New State hub with details of a potential launch date sourced from the title’s official App Store listing. Read on for the latest.
Original article: The original PUBG — aka PlayerUnknown’s BattleGrounds — is credited with kickstarting the battle royale video games trend. Tencent eventually ported PUBG to mobile devices with the appropriately titled PUBG: Mobile. Now, there’s a new game on the way called PUBG: New State.

This is a wholly different game than we’ve seen before from the PUBG universe. It takes place at a different time, has unique features, and is the first mobile PUBG title made by the original development company.

What is PUBG: New State?
PUBG: New State is a mobile-only game set in the PUBG universe. When it launches, it will be available on Android and iOS devices exclusively.

The original PUBG is set in the present day (or something close to it). New State, however, takes place in the not-too-distant future of 2051. As such, it will likely bring new characters and stories to the PUBG universe.
However, it is still a PUBG title and will play very much like previous games. You’ll get dropped onto a map and need to fight your way to victory as you face off against dozens of other players.
When and where will the game launch?
PUBG Studio would not commit to a specific date for the release of this new game. However, the company did say it plans for a 2021 launch on Android and iOS.
Alpha testing for those based in the US opened in June, suggesting that a 2021 launch was still possible. A new clue of a potential arrival date has emerged through the game’s recently listed Apple App Store page (h/t Droid Gamers). The listing mentions October 8, 2021, as the “expected” launch date of PUBG: New State.
Unfortunately, the game will not land in China, India, or Vietnam. This is likely due to issues PUBG titles faced in the past in those countries.

What are the unique features of this game?
The most notable feature about this new game isn’t the game itself but the company that made it. PUBG Studios is creating PUBG: New State, which is the same company that made the original PUBG.
The only other mobile PUBG title is PUBG: Mobile, which Chinese gaming giant Tencent created. That makes New State the only mobile game from the original development company.
Set in the future, the new PUBG game has a new map, new weapons, and new ways to interact with the environment.
Outside of development, New State will have features other PUBG titles don’t. For example, there will be a weapon customization system that will allow players to change the look of their weaponry during a match. This sounds similar to the system within Apex Legends. There will also be new weapons available that reflect the futuristic setting, including drones and deployable combat shields.
There will also be a whole new map for the game. When you drop, you’ll land in a place called Troi. PUBG Studios promises new landmarks and interactable environments, which should allow you to come up with unique ways to disable your opponents.
Finally, PUBG: New State will be built specifically for mobile playing. The developers promise “next-gen graphics that surpass the standard for mobile gaming.” Players can also expect the same control experience that is “easy to learn, but hard to master.”
Will PUBG: New State land on PC or other platforms?
As of right now, PUBG: New State is designed specifically for mobile. As such, you should only expect it to land on Android and iOS devices.

However, it wouldn’t be out of the question to think that a PC or console port could happen in the future. Part of competitor game Fortnite’s big appeal is cross-platform play. It isn’t unreasonable to assume that PUBG Studios would want to offer something comparable with its titles. Of course, it’s totally possible that that isn’t the strategy here and this game will stay a mobile exclusive. Time will tell.
For now, plan on playing this only on your phone or tablet (or within a PC emulation suite).
